The Kea’au High School Social Studies and World Languages department prepares students to confidently navigate a globalized world. To develop an understanding of the modern world and their role in it, students are presented with a diverse and challenging curriculum which includes: United States History, World History, Modern History of Hawai’i, Participation in Democracy, Geography and Global Studies, Psychology and Sociology, and Hawaiian Studies and Pacific Island Cultures. Students are able to further develop a global perspective and rich appreciation for culture by taking up to four years of language courses in: Hawaiian, Spanish, Chinese, and American Sign Language.
Kea’au High School students are required to take four credits in Social Studies to graduate and will develop the following skills:
Developing compelling questions and planning inquiries into key issues
Gathering and evaluating sources by credibility and a reflection on multiple viewpoints
Developing claims and counterclaims using evidence, and critically analyzing evidence
Constructing arguments and explanations using sound reasoning, and presenting arguments and explanations that reach a range of audiences using digital, print and oral technologies
Taking informed action by identifying local, regional and/or global problems or issues, analyzing the origins of a problem or issue, and create an action plan to address a solution to the problem or issue
Students who wish to enrich themselves through World Languages can satisfy one of their elective graduation requirements as well as a college entrance requirement while developing the following skills:
Communicate effectively in another language in order to function in a variety of situations and for multiple purposes
Interact with cultural competence and understanding
Develop insight into the nature of language through comparisons of the language studied and their own
Recognize the importance of language learning for academic achievement, civic and community engagement, and career development
